We all know that reading to our children is fun and a great way to spend time together, but did you know....

n    “Three decades of research have shown that parental participation improves student learning. This is true whether the child is in preschool or the upper grades, whether the family is rich or poor or whether the parents finished high school.”- As reported by US Dept. of Education.
n    The President of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends“daily reading to children from six months of age.” 
n    Reading aloud to children is the single most important intervention for developing their literacy skills. - National Commission of Reading.
n    Statistics show that when children have heard 1000 stories, only then will they want to learn to read. That’s just 3 stories a day for a year or 1 story a day for 3.
n    Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills bythe time they enter school are 3-4 times more likely to drop out inlater years – Dept. of Education
n    74% of children who are poor readers in 3rd grade are poor readersin 9th grade.
n    Children who watch four or more hours of TV per day have poorerreading skills than their peers who watch less TV.  - Center forMediaEducation
n     “So strong is the link between literacy and being a usefulmember of society that some states use 3rd grade-level readingstatistics as a factor in projecting future prison construction.”  - Bob Chase, President of National Education Assoc.
n    85% of children in the juvenile court system cannot read.

By spending a few minutes a day engaged in literacy based activities, parents can instill a love of books and learning as well as create a time for bonding with their children.
